It’s Grander Than Grand

I have always dreamed of seeing the Grand Canyon. When I was a little girl I watched a television series called ”The Brady Bunch”.

Many of you reading this are probably familiar with this series.

There was an episode where the family went on a trip to the Grand Canyon. And they had many adventures along the way. They stopped in a ghost town, mat an old prospector and got locked in the old jail cell by the prospector who thought they were there to steal his gold, later in this episode they camped in the Grand Canyon, Bobby and Cindy wander off and get lost, they come across an Indian (Native American) boy who helps them find their way back to their family where they get invited to the local tribal camp for dancing around the campfire and getting Indian names.

Now as I am Native American I am describing this as to how I viewed this as a young child.
I wanted to be a part of the Brady family, I wanted to go to the Grand Canyon, I wanted to meet ”real” Indians and go to a real ghost town.

As Gene and I entered Grand Canyon National Park, I reminded Gene of that story that I had told him long ago and we got a chuckle about it. But in that moment I was as excited as a kid in an amusement park. I was actually finally there. One of my dreams was coming true. I was finally at the Grand Canyon. There was no prospector, no ghost town and no pow wow to attend, but we were there and I was overjoyed.

Upon our first look at the Canyon, it literally made me gasp, it took my breath away. It really is that stunning, I’m thinking that the term breathtaking must have surely come from the first person who took their first look at that grander than Grand Canyon. Not really, but in all seriousness it really is beyond beautiful and really does leave you breathless.

We also seen the donkeys that will take you on a cliff edge ride down the canyon but Gene does not like horses or donkeys or heights for that matter so that was not even an option, and to be truthful, it didn’t sound that great to me either, so we opted to pass on that adventure.

We took a few short hikes and drove to the points that we could drive and then there is a bus system in place taking you to certain points in the park. So we then took the bus out to a couple of the viewing areas. We seen a couple of herd of elk on our drive through the southern portion of the park, we also stopped at the desert view watchtower, this is a spectacular viewing area and historical site as well as the site of the 1956 TWA-United Aviation accident. We had a grand time, excuse the pun, the hikes we took were a lot milder than what we had previously done in Utah and the shorter hikes were welcome at this point after days of longer steeper hikes, we found ourselves getting tired at this point of our journey and were now looking forward to the next leg of our adventure. Off to Sedona and Surprise Arizona to spend time with friends and get some rest.

So until next time….
